The principal and deputy of Perth Modern School have been suspended after a review of workplace culture at the school.
Key points:
- Perth Modern's principal Lois Joll and her current deputy Val Furphy have been stood aside
- The principal of Shenton College has been appointed to stand in for Ms Joll
- The move comes after a review of the workplace culture at the school.
Department of Education director-general Lisa Rodgers said Shenton College principal Mike Morgan would step into the role of interim principal after principal Lois Joll and associate principal Val Furphy were stood aside.
Ms Rodgers said she commissioned the review after concerns were brought to her attention.
"It has become apparent that changes are required at the school," she said in a statement.
"In order to work through these changes at an operational level, I have appointed Mr Mike Morgan, highly experienced principal of Shenton College, to act as the interim principal of Perth Modern School while we are going through this process."
Mike Morgan to stay for rest of school year
In a letter to the school's parents, Ms Rodgers said she had temporarily appointed Mr Morgan for the remainder of term four "to ensure there is no disruption to the high-quality education and support provided to the students of Perth Modern School".
"Please be assured the department will always act with the best interests of staff and students in mind," the letter said.
Mr Morgan told Shenton College parents and students of the "unexpected" move via email this afternoon, adding that Shenton's associate principal, Chris Hill ,would also be joining him at Perth Modern "as part of the interim leadership team".
WorkSafe is conducting a separate investigation into alleged inappropriate workplace behaviour at the school, which is Western Australia's only fully selective public school for academically gifted students.
The school has topped the academic league table for the West Australian Certificate Education (WACE) for the past five years.
