Roseville Area Schools principal dies by suicide; district provides counselors for students, staff - TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press

A Roseville Area Schools principal died by suicide, according to information sent out by the district.

Brian Koland was with the district for 30 years, according to a message from Superintendent Jenny Loeck, recently as principal of Edgerton Elementary School in Maplewood.

“While he had been on a leave of absence since the start of the school year, he is well known to the community,” Loeck said. “Before Edgerton, Mr. Koland served as the principal of Emmet D. Williams Elementary, as a special education supervisor, as an English language coordinator, as well as a teacher and coach in the district.”

Loeck said Koland’s family gave the district permission to release Koland’s cause of death. The district is providing social workers and counselors for students and staff.

“This is a difficult subject for people of all ages to talk about,” Loeck said. “If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, there is help. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255) provides around-the-clock free and confidential support for people in distress.”

Loeck added that “Koland was a warm and caring person. His presence and leadership will be deeply missed, and his memory will be celebrated by the entire Roseville Area Schools community.”
