Dr. Melissa Mealy named principal of Eshleman Elementary - Penn Points Online

Congratulations to Dr. Melissa Mealy, who has been named principal of Eshleman Elementary School by the Penn Manor Board of School Directors.

She replaces Dr. Krista Cox, who was recently appointed Penn Manor’s assistant superintendent for secondary education.

“I could not be more excited to join the team at Eshleman,” Dr. Mealy said. “Having visited the school in the past, I believe the positivity in the building is contagious, and I am committed to doing my part to make Eshleman an even greater place.”

Dr. Mealy has served since 2018 as assistant principal at Hambright Elementary School. She previously was the district’s K-12 English Language Arts Supervisor and began her career at Penn Manor in 2006 as a high school English teacher.

A native of Cresswell, Dr. Mealy attended Penn Manor schools and has been active in local  youth sports, serving as a coach and board member with the Penn Manor Soccer Club and as a youth basketball coach.

She received her bachelor’s degree in secondary English education and her master’s in educational leadership from Millersville University. Dr. Mealy earned her doctoral degree in educational leadership from Immaculata University in 2016.

Penn Manor superintendent Dr. Phil Gale said, “I’ve had the privilege of knowing Dr. Mealy as a student, serving as her principal when she was a teacher, and working closely with her during my time as both high school principal and assistant superintendent in Penn Manor.”

“I have full confidence in Dr. Mealy and know that she will do an outstanding job in this position,” he said.

Dr. Mealy plans to introduce herself to the students and parents at Eshleman in the coming weeks. 

She and her husband, Todd, live in Penn Manor. Their son will be a second-grader and their daughter will enter kindergarten this fall at Central Manor Elementary School.

A new principal will be stepping into both McBride schools this next fall. Jason Schwartz will take on the title and role beginning August 1, 2022. No stranger to rural schools, Schwartz has been working as both a Vice Principal and Principal within School District 57 for the past three years. 

Schwartz began his adventure as an educator 22 years ago. As a fresh graduate of Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, he accepted a position in Hall Beach Nunavut, north of the Arctic Circle.

“The school was a K-12 school,” said Schwartz. “It was a small isolated community of about 700 people. It was a fly-in community.” 

After three years of life in the true north, checking the playground for polar bears before recess and sometimes dog sledding to work, Schwartz moved back to Ontario where for 12 years he worked as an elementary school teacher, a special education teacher and received a promotion to Vice-Principal. 

After 12 years he traveled to and worked in an Ontario International School in China. Schwartz loves to experience other cultures and countries, so he made the move. He spent three years as Vice Principal and teaching at the Huamei-Bond International School in the city of Guangzhou, a city of about 16 million people, more people than the whole province of Ontario. 

“Where I was, in southern China, it was a very temperate climate,” said Schwartz. “There was no snow, and there were palm trees, and fruit groves. As I walked home from work I could fill my bag with fresh mangos and lychee for an after work reward.”

After three years, he gave up the palm trees and fruit groves and returned to Canada. Doors opened in School District 57, so he headed to a new climate. He served as Vice Principal at Blackburn and Giscome Elementary schools (concurrently), and most recently was Principal at Pineview Elementary.

His experiences at smaller, more rural schools have given him an appreciation for small-town communities.

“I understand and appreciate that community involvement is necessary,” said Schwartz. “Relationship building is key, with everyone.”

Being the new guy in town, he knows that there will need to be time invested in that relationship building, and allowing the community to get to know him.

“The biggest challenge will be getting to know people,” he said. “I want to hear where they come from, listen to their stories and work with them, and together see what comes next.” 

He hopes that students, staff and parents take advantage of his open door policy. 

“Come on in,” he said. “I want to provide a welcoming environment.”

As far as the split responsibilities between the schools go, Schwartz will not be taking on any regularly scheduled class times. His aim is to be a visible presence in the elementary school.

“I want them to see that I am growing and learning with them,” he said. Much of his time will be spent within the physical building of the elementary school. 

“At the highschool, Lisa Franke will be continuing in an administrative support role, and taking care of tasks when I am unavailable” said Schwartz. 

Schwartz is excited about extra curricular activities. He has experience coaching volleyball, but supports activities beyond the athletic ones.

“I want to work with staff and students to provide clubs that are possible and are desired,” he said.

Schwartz has driven through McBride many times, and now he is excited to spend more time here and explore. He is an avid hiker, and loves kayaking and canoeing. In the winter, he is looking forward to checking out the local snowshoe trails. He is an avid photographer who enjoys capturing the natural beauty as he is exploring. 

“I am also an avid reader,” he said. “I think that is expected with my profession.”

His love for travel has not waned, and he is looking forward to seeing more of the world as the opportunities open up.

Although his recent jobs near Prince George have been in small schools, he was living in the city and eager to settle down in a small community. 

“I look forward to understanding my role, and learning how I can support the students, the staff and the parents day-to-day within the community.”

MANSFIELD – Superintendent Teresa Murphy is pleased to announce that the Mansfield Public Schools has appointed a new Principal for Mansfield High School, Assistant Principal for Robinson Elementary, and a new district Athletic Director. 

Russ Booth

Russ Booth has been appointed as the new Principal of Mansfield High School. He began his role on July 1.

Booth served as the Assistant Principal of North Attleborough High School since 2017. He was previously the Department Head of Mathematics at King Philip Regional High School and was a classroom teacher for the Norwood Public Schools.

During his five years as assistant principal, Booth gained important experience overseeing schedules, supervising staff and developing methods to enhance student learning opportunities.

“I am excited to get started in this role and I look forward to working with all members of the community to celebrate the great achievements of our students,” Booth said. “I am also excited to learn about areas where we can grow, and encourage an environment where all students can pursue and achieve the goals they set for themselves each year and throughout their high school experience.”

Booth holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Bridgewater State College and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Bridgewater State College.

Tim Selmon

Tim Selmon has been appointed as the new Athletic Director for the district. He began his new role on July 1.

In 2021, Selmon became the Assistant Athletic Director of Mansfield High School. He has a total of 18 years of teaching experience in Mansfield High School classrooms. As Assistant Athletic Director, he made significant strides in changing student culture at sports games, as well as gaining strong relationships through the Hockomock League. He also gained important experience providing impactful and safe sporting environments.

“It is my honor to continue my support and leadership of Mansfield Athletics through my new role as Athletic Director,” Selmon said. “As far as I’m concerned, we have the most dedicated coaches, athletes and community in the league. I will work hard to further our incredible athletic program by building on the deep tradition of sports and sportsmanship at MHS.”

Selmon holds a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a master’s degree in Health Promotion and Sports Management from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). Additionally, he holds various certifications including Massachusetts Professional Certification in pre-K-8 and 5-12 Physical Education and National Certification from NIAAA as a Registered Athletic Administrator.

Felicia Frank

Felicia Frank has been appointed as the new Assistant Principal of Robinson Elementary School. She will begin her new role on Aug. 1.

Beginning in 2016, Frank worked as the visual arts teacher for grades K-2 at Cohasset’s Osgood Elementary School. She previously worked as a substitute teacher for the Whitman-Hanson Regional School Districtand Norwell Public Schools.

Frank holds a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in Studio Art from Endicott College, as well as a master’s degree in Teaching from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She also earned an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Bridgewater State University.

“We are thrilled for Mr. Booth, Ms. Frank and Mr. Selmon to start their new positions within the Mansfield Public Schools,” said Superintendent Murphy. “The appointees possess the skills required to excel in their new positions and all have a history of passionate education both in the classroom and beyond. We are sure that they will be excellent fits in their new roles and the entire Mansfield Schools community wishes them well.”

Additional Moves

The Mansfield Public Schools would like to announce additional staff changes as well:

Timothy Tichacek, who had served as Interim Principal at Mansfield High School, will assume the role of Assistant Director of Special Education for the Secondary Level.

Former Athletic Director Mike Redding will assume the role of Assistant Athletic Director and continue as head football coach of Mansfield High School.

Leslie Green has been appointed as the district’s new Transportation Manager. Green previously served as the Transportation Coordinator for the Medway Public Schools, and prior to that had several years in the private sector in the transportation industry.

Scott Sanchez has been appointed as the district’s new Director of C.H.A.M.P.S. Sanchez previously worked at the Lextended After School program in Lexington as Assistant Site Director, Co-Site Director and Site Director since 2018.
