JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) — Former Johnson City Middle School Principal, Daniel Erickson, has plead guilty to attempting to have sex with a student in July of 2023, according to District Attorney Paul Battisti.
Erickson is pleading guilty to Luring a Child, a Class E felony, as part of a negotiated disposition, or a plea bargain. In doing so, Erickson is set to serve six months in jail followed by five years of post-release probation as well as having to register as a sex offender and pay for the victims counseling, Battisti told NewsChannel 34.
“The trust placed in educators, particularly those in positions of authority such as principals, is sacred. When that trust is violated in such a heinous manner, it not only harms the individual victim but also undermines the foundation of safety and security in our schools,” Battisti said in a statement.
The former principal was arrested on July 7, 2023 for spending a week trying to lure a 16-year-old student to have sex with him via Snapchat messages. Erickson agreed to meet the student at a remote location for sex but when he showed up, Broome County Sheriff’s detectives were there to arrest him. On August 25, Johnson City Middle School announced Erickson would step down as principal.
Infamously, Erickson was said to have shown up to the meeting with a box of condoms, chicken McNuggets and a McDonald’s Grimace shake. Erickson allegedly attempted to meet the student numerous times prior to the arrest but was unsuccessful.
“Our office remains committed to holding accountable those who exploit and prey upon our children… Together, we will continue to fight to protect our children from harm,” Battisti added.
Erickson will appear back in Broome County Court on May 6, 2024 to turn himself in and begin serving his jail time. He will officially be sentenced on July 30, 2024.
