Myers Park High School Principal Robert Folk said the school community is praying for the family and friends of junior Sophie Gordon, the Charlotte teen who died in a car crash in Asheville on Saturday.
Gordon, 16, was one of five passengers in the vehicle when it crashed, and one of two who died. Two other teens from Charlotte remained hospitalized on Monday.
Myers Park High “has experienced many losses this school year, and death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it is sudden,” Folk said in a statement to families following the crash. “We may feel a variety of emotions: shock, sadness, or confusion. What is most important is that we care for and support each other.”
Folk said a crisis response team, as well as counselors, were made available to students on Monday.
Two other teens from Charlotte, Abby Robinson, 17, and Isabella Tarantelli, 18, were taken to a hospital in Asheville with serious injuries, according to the NC State Highway Patrol. Charlotte Catholic High School said on social media the two students were in the intensive care unit.
Students organized a prayer service in Keffer Stadium on Sunday evening.
According to the highway patrol, the crash took place about 11:30 p.m. on the Interstate 40 off-ramp for Exit 53-B in Buncombe County.
The driver of a 2015 Volvo was traveling east on I-40 when he took the exit ramp too quickly and lost control, the highway patrol said. The car ran off the left side of the roadway and hit a tree.
The driver was identified as William Tyson Neumann, 18, of Augusta, Ga., and the front passenger was identified as Hunter Sanford, 18, of Pineville.
Robert Fox, 19, from Wilmette, Ill., was the other teenage passenger who died in the crash. Neumann, the driver, had minor injuries, the highway patrol said.
The investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed.
