According to Sheela Hembram of Upgraded Middle School at Bardaun in Jamui district's Maoist-affected Khaira block, she and her family "are homeless" as they have been getting a new house built in a nearby village.
"I have not captured any classroom. Rather, I have been staying in the school office," principal Hembram told TOI over phone Sunday after photos of the school went viral and local authorities ordered an inquiry.
The school has 150 students, from Class I to VIII. Classes are now being held in just three rooms due to the space constraint -- something Hembram claimed he "lamented". Classes I-III are held in one room, IV-V in another and VI-VIII in a third.
The office room could have helped matters but, for now, it is doubling as "bedroom" and more for the "homeless" principal and her family for the past four months.
"I had planned to vacate the room once my house is completed but now I will do so sooner as people have raised objections," said Hembram. Matters have not ended with the office room. The principal is also using the classrooms to store construction materials and taking help of the schoolchildren in the task. The viral clips show the children lugging stuff like iron rods from one classroom to another.
District education officer Kapil Deo Tiwari said he had "come to know about the matter" and ordered an inquiry. "We will initiate action against the principal if it is found to be true," Tiwari further added.
Parents said it had been tough for children to concentrate, with multiple classes being held in one room. "Have you ever come across an office-room being used as a bedroom while students of several classes study together in one room?" asked one of the parents.
