Sydney principal faces rape and choking charges - Sydney Morning Herald

The principal of a homeschool tutoring centre that claims to have supported hundreds of Sydney students has been charged with rape, non-consensual choking and assault.

Mohamed El Bizry, who also goes by the name Muhammad Al-Bizry, founded Sunnah Life Academy (SLA), an Islamic-based group home-schooling centre in Bankstown for years kindergarten to 10.

The Herald can reveal the 41-year-old has essentially been under home detention since he was granted strict bail at Parramatta Local Court on October 22.

He was arrested at an Edmondson Park home on October 21 and charged with one count of sexual intercourse without consent, two counts of intentionally choking without consent and one count of common assault. He is yet to enter any pleas. None of the charges relate to any student.

Police claim the incidents relate to several alleged assaults in 2021.

According to the SLA website, the academy is “Sydney’s leading Islamic-based homeschool tuition centre,” teaching a mix of academic lessons and “real-world skills that matter”.

A source close to the case told the Herald that SLA has become increasingly popular among Islamic children in western Sydney whose families have opted to move them out of government and non-government schools to enroll them in homeschooling with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) so they can attend the centre.

Its website states it has supported 634 students to gain home-schooling approvals from NESA.

The centre supports children with extra tutoring who are already approved for homeschooling, providing up to three days of classes for up to 15 students per teacher at a cost of $155 a week.

El Bizry, from Revesby, refers to himself on his Instagram profile as SLA’s principal and founder.

Court documents show El Bizry was granted strict bail on a $10,000 surety, under which he must not leave his home except to go to work, report to police, attend legal meetings, face court or have emergency medical treatment.

He must also be of good behaviour, report to Bankstown police station daily and not approach any international departure point or witness except through a lawyer.

The conditions also prevent him from possessing more than one phone and sim card, require him to give his phone details to police and ban him from using any encrypted device or chat platform such as Whatsapp or Snapchat.

El Bizry is next due to face Campbelltown Local Court on December 13.

In a statement, a NESA spokesperson said it does not register or regulate tutoring centres and that Sunnah Life Academy is not a registered school.

El Brizy’s defence lawyer, Sam Karnib, has been contacted for comment.
