Ze'ev Degani, the principal of flagship Tel Aviv high school Gymnasia Herzliya in Tel Aviv, announced his resignation in protest of the cancellation of an event at the school where high school graduates intended to declare their refusal to enlist in the Israeli army.
On Saturday, the school's board voted against holding the event, called "Youth Against Dictatorship," which was scheduled to take place on Sunday. Approximately 200 teenagers from various schools were planning to declare their refusal to enlist in the IDF in protest of the judicial coup and the occupation.
Ze'ev Degani, the school's principal, warned Saturday that he would resign his post if the event is canceled.
On Friday, Meir Shimoni, the Director General of the Education Ministry, penned a letter to the high school's administration urging them not to host the event. He characterized it as a "contentious activity that doesn't align with the Director-General's circular." Shimoni also called the institution's management to "rethink the event's presence within the educational institution's premises and the way it's conducted to ensure it complies with the law."
He emphasized that "It's crucial to underscore that a failure to adhere to the law and guidelines, including those mentioned earlier, may result in various consequences, including the revocation of recognition and funding for the educational institution."
Shimoni also pointed out that the education ministry's stance is that it's unsuitable to present one-sided viewpoints to an audience that includes minors. He expressed concerns that "students under the authority of the principal who don't agree with his positions might hesitate to voice their views within the educational institution under his management."
The school's board, led by retired Supreme Court Justice Yoram Danziger, convened on Saturday evening without prior notice to Degani. The school's principal had intended to send a response letter following Shimoni's inquiry, and joined the committee's meeting. After the vote, he threatened to resign if indeed the event was canceled.
During a recent meeting with new IDF recruits last month, Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi acknowledged the challenges arising from widespread public debates surrounding the judicial coup legislation. He stated, "The IDF presents the greatest opportunity in this dispute because we know how to unite together with our differences. We share a common goal and all march toward it. This also sends a message to our adversaries, […] that the IDF, regardless of what's happening in Israeli society, stands as the protector of the state and serves as an exemplar of unity."
