Crescentview School's new principal for fall weighs in on changes - PortageOnline.com

This fall, Doyle Moar is going to be principal of Crescentview School. Notice that the French word "École" was not mentioned, and that was intentional. Seeing as French Immersion is going to be taught solely at École Arthur Meighen (which also dropped "school" from its name). They're returning to what the school was originally called before the amalgamation in 2006.

Crescentview will now be K-to-8. Moar explains what, if any, changes will be made for him personally, after having been vice principal at Arthur Meighen.

"I've been vice principal at Arthur Meighen School for five years. Going into a newer school, a newer environment, it is a new building. But I think, overall, a lot of the staff from Arthur Meighen -- we had about 20 teaching staff that moved over to Crescentview -- and there'll be tons of kids from Arthur Meighen in the English program that will be moving, as well. So, I think the building's different, the layout might be a little bit different, but a lot of the things that we did at Arthur Meighen will still be pretty similar to what we're doing at Crescentview, as well. So, I think the transition will be pretty smooth."

Moar notes it's his first assignment as principal after having been Vice Principal, and it's something that anyone who serves as vice principal vies for.

"When I first started my career, I don't know if that's something that I necessarily strived to do, but as I got through after, maybe, 10 years of being a teacher and stuff, you kind of look toward doing a little bit more. I kind of got pushed into that administrative role when I was at Yellowquill School just doing something there being admin designate, and taking some leadership opportunities. That kind of put me on the road to this."

He explains he was vice principal for five years and the goal is to then become principal.

"I'm really excited to get going and just do whatever I can to lead Crescentview School the best way that I can," continues Moar. "In most situations, between principal and vice principal, it's a more cohesive type of environment. I know there are different roles that you do play. Traditionally, a vice principal would be more in charge of the discipline of the school and maybe some of the support staff rules -- heavily involved in the students -- whereas, traditionally, the principal was more of a building manager and would manage teaching staff."

Moar says his task as vice principal at Arthur Meighen saw himself and the principal work together in more of a co-leadership manner.

"We had our specific roles that we would take more leadership on, but we've worked together in all those other types of things, whether it was budgeting, building maintenance, or just working with the staff and the students in discipline," notes Moar. "I kind of think that's how it's going to work at Crescentview. I think that's an effective way to run the school as opposed to just having two separate things. For example, the principal's role is only this, the vice principal's role with only that. I think when you work together, it just creates a better or more cohesive leadership environment.

Suzanne Calder will be the new vice principal who was at the High School as vice principal.

Moar says the only real change is going to be his work in a new school in the sense that Arthur Meighen was a middle-year school and Crescentview was an early-year school.

"Now Crescentview is a K-to-8 school -- really, early and middle. Arthur Meighen is the same. For me, it's just going to be a little bit of a change. Instead of having Grade 4 as being the lowest grade in your school, now we have Kindergarten. But that's nothing new for me because I taught at Yellowquill School for 12 years before I moved over to Arthur Meighen. We were always a K-to-8 school and we were K-to-9 school before amalgamation. I've taught the little kids, so, it will be nice having little guys and girls in the school again."

He adds it's sometimes refreshing to have the youngest students in school, noting middle years can be pretty challenging at times. Moar says it's also good for the older students to have the little ones there, making it a nice change overall.
