A former elementary school principal is suing the Georgetown County School District, claiming her removal from her role in 2022 was an act of racial discrimination.

This is one of two racial discrimination lawsuits against the school district brought by a school leader. Another complaint by the principal of Carvers Bay High School was filed on May 1.

A spokesperson for the school district declined a request for comment, stating the district does not comment on pending litigation.

The suit was filed on April 24 by Tonja Johnson, the current assistant principal of Andrews Elementary School. Attorney Thomas Tisdale, who is representing both principals, could not be reached for a comment.

The suit states that while acting as principal at Maryville Elementary, Johnson, a Black woman, encountered “unfounded, racially oriented and unjustified resistance to her management.” A grievance filed with the school district management asking for the behavior of the white administrative employees at the school be addressed and corrected was rejected, according to the court records.

A group of white teachers at Maryville Elementary School wrote a letter to the school district, complaining about her administrative performance that was “quite obviously” racially oriented, according to the suit.

The creation of a hostile work environment due to the discrimination is listed as a second cause of action in the suit. The filing also says that gender discrimination is a core reason for her dismissal as principal.

In an answer filed May 11, attorneys for the school district have asked for the entire action to be dismissed. The filing states that her dismissal was unrelated to race or gender, but due to her “refusal to demonstrate significant improvement” after failing to pass two performance evaluations.

The answer confirms that a letter was written by employees expressing concerns about Johnson’s performance.
