INDORE: College principal Vimukta Sharma, who was battling for life for five days after being set on fire by a student on campus, died early Saturday morning.
"Vimukta Sharma had suffered 90% burns and her vital organs were severely burnt in the fire. We had put her on life support but she succumbed to a cardiac pulmonary arrest on Saturday. She also had suffered multiple organ failure," said Dr Amit Bhatt of Indore's Choithram Hospital.
Ashutosh Shrivastav, the student accused of setting her on fire, has been booked under the National Security Act (NSA) and now faces murder charges.
Professor Sharma's family and staff members are shattered. It was an entirely preventable tragedy, they say, pointing out that Simrol police station had an FIR and four written complaints that Ashutosh was issuing death threats, but they did nothing.
A day after TOI carried a report on this, an assistant sub inspector (ASI) was suspended for not investigating the complaints.
Former chief minister and PCC chief Kamal Nath on Saturday expressed grief at Prof Sharma's death and said that law and order has collapsed in Madhya Pradesh.
Accused sent to judicial custody
Principal Sharma had to pay with her life for police negligence. It's heart-breaking. Such an end for a daughter of the state is going to leave a deep scar in minds and hearts. It makes us hang our heads in shame," Nath said.
Sharma was set on fire in BM College of Pharmacy by Ashutosh on February 20 when she was on her way home in the evening. Sharma was taken to hospital by a campus electrician and sports teacher. Doctors tried desperately to save her life but she died at 3:45am on Saturday. Her last rites were carried out at Regional Park crematorium by her husband Manoj and daughter Devanshi. Hundreds of mourners joined.
Ashutosh, who had suffered 11% burns in the incident, was produced in court on Friday and taken on police remand for a day. Indore rural SP Bhagwat Singh Virde said, "After adding sections of murder against the accused, he was produced in court on Saturday and sent to judicial custody."
A 2022 batch student, Ashutosh was on bail in a stabbing case when he attacked the principal, say police.
