New Ward 11 councillor, a retired principal, wants answers on the Greenbelt and more crossing guards - CBC.ca

The new councillor representing Ward 11, a retired principal with 29 years of experience in education, says the city needs more crossing guards and better infrastructure.

Mark Tadeson, 57, says he's focused on improving the ward's roadways, protecting Hamilton Greenbelt spaces and building a new elementary school in Binbrook.

"The big thing for me is that our infrastructure hasn't kept up with our growth," said Tadeson. "I just want to look at those things to see if we can make some improvements and enhancements in our roads that lead to our communities."

Tadeson was officially sworn in Nov. 16, 2022 as city councillor of ward 11, home of Lake Niapenco, the Binbrook Conservation Area and the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.

Thursday night, he'll host Mayor Andrea Horwath's New Year's Levee celebration in Glanbrook to recognize outstanding volunteers in the community.

He has worked in both the Halton and Hamilton Wentworth District School Boards (HWDSB) and is now working with his fellow councilors and school board trustees to address issues that the boards currently face.

Tadeson said he'll leave running school boards to trustees and executive counsels, but says his experience as an educator might help smooth processes along. He'll sit on the HWDSB Liaison sub-committee and the school boards property sub-committee.

He says "we need more crossing guards city-wide. I am also fielding issues around the school bus delays."

From educator to councillor

Tadeson served as a member of the Halton Board of Education as a teacher for 12 years, before becoming a vice principal for the HWDSB for 17 years.

He says his experiences working with and meeting families of different backgrounds powered his campaign strategies and approach.

Tadeson said, "working with families closely in those communities helped me to recognize the needs, strengths and character of each of those different communities."

Robert Maudsley, a friend and the acting principal of Millgrove Elementary School, says Tadeson is the right type of listener for the people of Ward 11.

He says "Mark is a really good listener, a critical thinker."

When longtime Coun. Brenda Johnson decided to step down from her position, Tadeson joined three others in the open race for the seat. He ran on a campaign focused on reducing the amount of garbage found on rural lands and preventing the intensification of small villages.

"He had been mulling it over, actually, for a while and when he heard that Brenda Johnson was going to be stepping down I think he thought 'well maybe this is the right time,'" said Maudsley.

Tadeson, one of nine new council members, says before his swearing in on Nov. 16, he was already in talks with the city's parks department to review community ice rinks and find a way to develop a second arena in the ward.

"I'm looking forward to getting into some problem solving around some of those boards that I'm sitting on," he said. "It's going to be challenging but you know I'm actually excited about the opportunities for the city going forward."

Doug Ford's Greenbelt plan 'doesn't make sense' councillor says

Tadeson also says Doug Ford's More Homes Built Faster Act (Bill 23) doesn't make sense to him and people in Ward 11.

"They've taken some green space away from out of White Church Road and it's kind of kitty corner to the outskirts of the new mount hope developments, but it's not really connected to anything," Tadeson said. "It doesn't make sense to people."

According to Bill 23, the Ontario government is planning to work on the area south of White Church Road E.

"There's lots of land that can be developed in the existing spaces within the urban boundary right now, and if that's not enough then let's do it responsibly and slowly moving forward so we're not just freeing up 2,200 hectares of land haphazardly without reason," he said.
