ROSEVILLE, Mich. – A Macomb County high school student has been charged with a five-year felony after the principal looked in his backpack and found a loaded gun that had been stolen out of Bloomfield Township.
The discovery was made Wednesday (Nov. 9) at Roseville High School.
Police said an 11th-grader reported “worrisome behavior” between two others at the school that led the student to believe one of them had a gun in his backpack.
The principal, assistant principal, and security resource officer found the student. The principal searched his backpack and found a Glock 9 mm firearm, according to authorities.
Officials said the gun had an extended magazine and a round in the chamber. It had been stolen out of Bloomfield Township.
The student denied that the gun belonged to him, but the security resource officer handcuffed him and retrieved the weapon.
“The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office has zero tolerance for guns in schools,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said. “The student who saw something and said something is a hero in my book. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
On Thursday, the student appeared in front of a Macomb County juvenile referee. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, a five-year felony, and possession of a weapon in a weapon-free school zone, a 93-day misdemeanor.
The student was detained without bond and is being held at the Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center. Officials are trying to transfer the case to Wayne County, where the student lives.
A control date was set for 1:30 p.m. Friday.
