STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Moore Catholic High School has announced its new principal as Scott Gabel, who brings extensive academic experience and leadership to the Graniteville school.
President Gina DeSantis announced, effective Monday, that Gabel will serve as principal, appointed by the seven-person search committee and confirmed by Moore’s board of trustees.
Gabel served as Moore’s chair of the social studies department, moderator for student government, and was the internal coordinator for the school’s Middle States re-accreditation initiative. He previously worked at St. Joseph Hill Academy High School, holding the positions of dean of academics and social studies chair.
“His intuitive understanding of our mission and vision positions him as the ideal candidate,” said DeSantis. “Mr. Gabel values all aspects of student life; be it impactful student-focused instruction, our various athletic programs, our renowned Institute for the Performing Arts or our continued commitment to community service. He joins our vice principal, Mrs. Karen Rudick, and myself as president in forming a dynamic, forward-focused leadership team.”
Gabel described himself as a respectful person who always listens to students and talks with them.
“I think that is such an important part of being a teacher is finding a way to connect to all your students, even the students who may not be the most talkative, maybe the quiet student sitting in the corner, finding a way to interconnect those kids,” he said.
He will take the helm from DeSantis, who was previously in a dual role of both president and principal. She had been principal of the school since 2016 and was promoted to the dual role of both president and principal in 2019.
DeSantis and board chair Ann Marie Henderson previously explained that, like many of the successful high schools in the Archdiocese of New York, Moore Catholic had reached the point where president and principal responsibilities need to be divided between two people.
DeSantis will remain in her role as president of the high school.
In her leadership role, Gabel will report to DeSantis and be an “active collaborator” in Moore’s growing mission.
“We are at a point now where we really can, we can kind of reinvent ourselves,” he said. “So moving forward, what is it that we want Moore Catholic to be? We have our vision, we have our vision 20 to 2025, but you guys are students. What is it that you want to get out of your high school experience? I’m excited for events and occasions on campus and new ideas that maybe you guys have that can lead to new opportunities.”
DeSantis said in a school interview that Moore deserves to have someone like Gabel, who will be dedicated to the day-to-day operations, academics and what happens on a daily basis. She said she will pull resources and leverage connections in the community to help advance development, as well as the school’s mission and vision.
The president also explained she has been writing a notebook to aid Gabel in his new role. The most important advice, she said, is to spend the start of the school year listening to teachers, staff and students to hear what is working and what isn’t working.
The pair will share investment in the vision and mission of Moore Catholic to further recognize its value in the community.
Moore Catholic High School is a co-educational school founded in 1962 with an enrollment of approximately 500 students, according to the school’s website.
