Tecumseh principal reassigned after district investigation finds his conduct ‘less than professional’ - MLive.com

TECUMSEH, MI - Tecumseh Public Schools has reassigned its high school principal Dennis Miles to the position of director of operations after an internal district investigation.

Niles was placed on paid non-disciplinary leave in May after the district launched an investigation into “misconduct allegations” against him. The district’s investigation found Niles’ behavior to be “less than professional” and that he had faced the appropriate disciplinary action, per TPS policy, school officials said Monday, July 11, in announcing the administrative move.

Niles’ behavior was investigated by the Tecumseh Police Department, which determined on May 27 that Niles did not “commit criminal misbehavior against any student.”

District Spokesman Victor Pratt said the ‘less than professional conduct” was against a student, but did not provide additional information.

MLive/The Ann Arbor News has submitted a Freedom of Information Act request seeking copies of the reports involved in this investigation.

Superintendent Rick Hilderley said in a news release that he believes a change was necessary at Tecumseh High School after the outcome of the investigation. Results of the investigative report were not provided by the district.

Niles became principal of Tecumseh High School in November 2020. The investigation into allegations of his misconduct was led by the district’s human resources department with assistance from the district’s law firm.

“Although it was determined Mr. Niles did not break any laws, his conduct did not meet my expectations or the district’s standards for professionalism,” Hilderley said in a statement. “It’s important that our students are not subjected to something that may make them feel uncomfortable.”

Niles will now undergo “retraining” in appropriate and professional conduct, Pratt said. Niles could not be reached for comment.

“Going into the new school year, the district will strongly reiterate the conduct and ethics policies to our staff set forth by the board of education,” Hilderley said.

As director of operations, Niles will oversee the maintenance, custodial, and technology departments. He will also oversee the operations for Tecumseh Community Pool. Pratt said Niles does have past experience overseeing operations at a previous district.

“The board and Superintendent Hilderley felt a new voice to lead the high school was the best choice moving forward,” Pratt said.

The search for a new high school principal is underway, district officials said. Greg Dolson will remain the assistant principal at Tecumseh High School and head football coach of the varsity football team, district officials said.
