Sherman Middle School gets new principal – Herald Democrat - Sherman Denison Herald Democrat

Staff reports

Sherman Middle School will have new leadership when students return to the classroom this fall. District officials announced this week that former SISD Assistant Principal Scott Johnston will be returning to de district to serve as the new principal for SMS this year.

The announcement of Johnston’s hire comes amid several hires and promotions at the end of the 2022 school year and the promotion of Tyson Bennett to the superintendent’s seat earlier this year.

“Scott is an experienced principal with a heart to serve and lead our students and staff at Sherman Middle School,” Bennett said Thursday. “He has all the qualities identified in our leadership profile that was recently built from surveying staff, and I can’t wait to see the amazing things he does for our SMS bearcats.”

Johnston brings with him 23 years of experience in education and school administration including a tenure with Sherman as the assistant principal of Sherman High School for two years. He also served as the assistant principal for the disciplinary alternative education program, Perrin Learning Center, boot camp and Juvenile Detention Center.

Most recently, he served as the Principal for S&S High School for the past two years. Outside of Sherman and S&S, he also has worked with Lancaster High School, Grand Prairie High School, Dowelll Middle School and Joe. J. Bryant Elementary.

“I am excited about returning to Sherman ISD,” he said. “I built some great relationships in Sherman with staff, parents and students, and I look forward to working with them again.

Johnston will be the second principal in the history of the middle school campus. Amy Porter served as the first principal when the campus was transitioned from a high school to a middle school as a part of the 2020 transition plan.

District officials confirmed that Porter has been promoted to become the district’s new director of elementary education.

“There is a lot of growth opportunity in Sherman, and I am honored to join the team at Sherman Middle School,” he said. “I relish the opportunity to instill honor, integrity and a hard work ethic into the new generation of leaders in our Sherman community.”
