Chemainus and Lake Cowichan principals trading places - Cowichan Valley Citizen

Cowichan Valley School District principals Lori Hryniuk and Jaime Doyle are essentially trading places.

Hryniuk will be going from Chemainus Secondary School to Lake Cowichan School and vice versa for Doyle during the 2022-23 school year.

Those are two of several principal reassignments announced by the school district to take effect in September.

Hryniuk came to Chemainus Secondary School in September of 2017 and her time there coincided with the arrival of the Grade 8s at the school through to their recent graduation.

“I am so very grateful for my five years as the principal of Chemainus Secondary, an amazing community of learners, staff and families,” noted Hryniuk. “This school and greater community is truly an example of how a ‘village raises a child’ to which I am so happy to have played a role in.

“A huge shout out to the staff who works tirelessly to ensure that all learners find success and develop the essential skills needed to navigate this ever-changing and complex world. All the best to the future of Chemainus Secondary, its learners and community. Huy tseep q’u.”

In other secondary school appointments, Nicole Boucher goes from Quamichan School to become principal at Frances Kelsey Secondary and Claire Whitney gets promoted from Quamichan vice principal to Quamichan principal.

There are no changes to the principals at the Chemainus and Crofton elementary schools, but several others within the district are going to different schools.

Updesh Cheema becomes the principal at George Bonner Elementary, Fiona Somerville at Tansor Elementary and Scott Jackson at Bench Elementary. Cheema was previously at Tansor, Somerville at Palsson Elementary in Lake Cowichan and Jackson’s post was made permanent from a former temporary position at Bench.

A new principal for Palsson is to be announced.

Rhonda LaForge remains as temporary vice principal at Chemainus Secondary. Kelly Girvan and Sarah Simmonds are temporary vice principals at Alexander Elementary and Quamichan School, respectively.

Darlene Reynolds retains her position, but now under a different designation as district principal for inclusive learning and Kim Darbyshire, formerly of the Nanaimo School District, has been hired for the new position of district vice principal for inclusive learning.
