After a consensus was reached by the majority of Crookston School Board members during a special meeting Monday, May 9, Assistant Principal Matt Torgerson has been promoted to the high school principal position following Nicki Martinez’s recent resignation. Torgerson has been assistant principal for two years and prior to that was dean of students.
“I have been impressed with Mr. Torgerson’s growth as an educational leader and am excited to see him work with the staff to continue the progress made at Crookston High School,” said Superintendent Jeremy Olson in a media release following Torgerson’s acceptance. “He has developed strong relationships with staff and students and will give Crookston High School consistent leadership.”
During the special meeting, Olson recommended Torgerson for principal based on multiple factors including being close to getting the position a year ago when he was in the running with Martinez. Board member Adrianne Winger thought it was important they hire someone who knows the district and Board Chair Frank Fee added that it was important to have school staff on his side which he felt Torgerson did.
“We’ve seen his growth this past year and I could follow that direction (to appoint Torgerson), said Fee.
Board member Dave Davidson thought it might be better for the district to have a regular hiring process opening up for applications, also noting the possibility of Torgerson being the one selected. Board member Mike Theis mentioned that he liked the idea of transparency for citizens and staff, but felt they had a “vacuum of leadership” and the chance that there may be an internal move made for the interim superintendent position had him wanting consistency for the district. Later, Theis made a motion for Olson to reach out to Torgerson to see if he was interested in the principal position. Theis then amended his motion to allow for the district to open up the assistant principal position if Torgerson accepted.
