An Alle-Kiski Valley teacher, principal among finalists for teacher appreciation awards - TribLIVE

Two Alle-Kiski Valley educators are among finalists in an awards program in which the public selects the winners.

R. Patrick Merchand, principal of Kiski Area East Primary School, is up for principal of the year for The Education Partnership’s third annual Teacher Appreciation Awards.

Julie Erb, a teacher at Martin Elementary School in New Kensington-Arnold, is a finalist for elementary teacher of the year.

Since 2009, the Pittsburgh-based nonprofit has partnered with public, private and charter schools to provide school supplies to economically disadvantaged students and their teachers across eight counties in Southwestern Pennsylvania. It has distributed supplies to more than 58,000 students from 157 under-resourced schools.

“The Teacher Appreciation Awards is a unique and special program for The Education Partnership that resonates closely with our mission,” said Elizabeth Malone, advancement manager. “We know how hard our teachers and schools work each year with the limited resources provided, and we strive to help our schools whenever we can.

“We need to increase public awareness of the importance of quality educators in Southwestern Pennsylvania and show our schools we support and honor their achievements, dedication, and commitment to their communities,” she said. “We love to be able to celebrate our many teachers, administrators, and school staff throughout the schools we serve, and this is our way of saying thank you for their hard work and service.”

Voting is open through 5 p.m. May 13 on the organization’s website at theeducation parntership.org.

Participants can select one educator per category and vote once per day during the voting period. Voters are able to skip a category if they don’t wish to vote for any educator in that category.

Other categories

In addition to principal and elementary teacher of the year, there are award categories for middle school, high school and rookie teachers of the year, and for outstanding noninstructional staff such as paraprofessionals, front office and counselors.

There were more than 90 nominations this year, Malone said.

“It was a great list of potential candidates for finalists,” she said. “Our selection committee took a lot of time to decide and pick two or three finalists per the six award categories.”

For principal honors, Merchand is a finalist with Candee Morris of East Allegheny High School.

The other nominee for elementary teacher is Renee Sunder of Pittsburgh Whittier K-5.

“Regardless of who the finalists are and who the winners will be, in the end, we want all our teachers and schools to know we appreciate their dedication to educational excellence,” Malone said.

Erb is not the first teacher from Martin Elementary or New Kensington-Arnold to be recognized in the partnership’s program.

Alissa Szewczak, a kindergarten teacher at Martin, was named elementary teacher of the year for 2021. Abbe Ward, a teacher at Roy A. Hunt Elementary, was a finalist for rookie teacher of the year.
