SAGINAW, MI — As the community mourns the loss of Chester Miller Elementary School principal Robert Ueberroth, Saginaw Public Schools leaders announced the entire district would excuse students from class early on the day of his funeral.
Superintendent Ramont Roberts said students will be dismissed at 11:35 a.m. Monday, April 11.
The decision was announced late afternoon Friday, April 8, after school officials were alerted about an expected staff shortage for Monday afternoon, when a number of employees scheduled time off.
Roberts said he was under the impression the sudden surge in scheduled absences and the timing of Ueberroth’s funeral were related.
“I can’t ask all the staff that decided to take the day off why they (plan to take the day off), but I’m assuming it’s to attend the service, and so we made the adjustment in the schedule,” Roberts said.
Chester Miller Elementary classes were canceled entirely for Monday, he said.
The last class session there was Wednesday, April 6, when parents said they arrived to pick up students and discovered several ambulances and fire department vehicles at the school. Parents said, later that day, they learned the first responders were summoned to the campus because of Ueberroth, who died that day.
Officials have not announced the cause of death for Ueberroth, a 50-year-old Bay City native who was a husband and father of twin sons.
A community vigil, visitation hours and a funeral liturgy were announced late in the week. Earlier in the week, a church neighboring Chester Miller Elementary hosted a vigil for mourners.
A visitation session and another vigil service were planned Sunday, April 10, at Squires Funeral Home, 211 N. Henry in Bay City. The visitation hours span 2-8 p.m., and the vigil begins at 6 p.m.
Ueberroth’s funeral was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of Czestochowa-St. Stanislaus Church, 1503 Kosciuszko Ave. in Bay City. A visitation session will precede the service, beginning at noon.
Since Saginaw Public Schools announced Ueberroth’s death, colleagues, students and parents have expressed their adoration and respect for Ueberroth, who first was hired by Saginaw Public Schools in 1999. Many students referred to him affectionately as “Mr. U.” Many co-workers and friends called him Rob.
Before he was named principal at Chester Miller Elementary four years ago, Ueberroth worked as a traveling physical education teacher throughout the school district; and as a science teacher, coach and assistant athletics director at Saginaw High School.
“Rob truly loved teaching and coaching children and young adults,” his obituary reads. “He was proud to have made an impact on their lives and will always be remembered for his compassionate and caring ways.”
In 2006, Ueberroth received the Saginaw Valley Teacher of the Year Award, his obituary states.
Ueberroth graduated from Bay City Central High School in 1990.
In 1999, he earned a bachelor’s degree in education and sports training from Saginaw Valley State University. There, he spent three summers as a student trainer for the Detroit Lions, the NFL team that hosted its training camps at the Kochville Township-based campus during his undergraduate years.
In 2007, he earned a master’s degree in public school administration at SVSU, preparing him for his career as a principal.
Ueberroth married Heather Eldredge in June 2003 at Our Lady of Czestochowa-St. Stanislaus Church. She works as a teacher for Saginaw Public Schools.
He is survived by their sons, Tyler and Cody; his parents, Bill and Pat Ueberroth; and two brothers, Jeff and Mike Ueberroth.
Saginaw Public Schools parents and staff members said Robert Ueberroth and his wife were dedicated parents, closely following their teenage sons’ standout amateur careers as athletes at Swan Valley High School. Just last month, MLive profiled the twins as they prepared to compete in the Michigan high school individual wrestling state finals at Ford Field.
In lieu of flowers, individuals planning an expression of sympathy for the Ueberroth family are asked to consider supporting the Tyler and Cody Ueberroth Scholarship Fund set up at Team One Credit Union, the obituary for their father stated.
