Highbridge Hill Elementary School in New Ipswich will have a new principal starting this summer, as Julia Coquillette will be joining the Mascenic district in July.
Coquillette is currently assistant principal at Heron Pond Elementary School in Milford, and will finish out the school year there before starting at Highbridge Hill. She will replace Marion Saari, who is retiring.
“I really love my position, but my dream and my goal is to become a principal,” she said. “I was just really intrigued by this position.”
Coquillette is a 2004 graduate of Boston College, and received her master’s degree from Lesley University and her principal certification from Rivier University. She has spent the majority of her career at the elementary school level, and said that enjoys working with elementary-age children. Her current school starts at second grade, and she said the prospect of working with even younger children was another important co mponent of her interest.
“I was sort of excited about that opportunity to get back to working with pre-K all the way through fourth,” she said.
Coquillette said that she was also drawn to the position because she knew of the school already, as her daughter had competed in sports there before, and thought the building was beautiful.
“It stuck out in my mind,” she said.
Coquillette said she’s excited to join the Mascenic district.
“It struck me how nice and kind everyone was to one another, and everybody seems to truly enjoy each other, which I really loved,” she said.
Being a principal instead of an assistant principal will be an adjustment, Coquillette said, and one she is ready for.
“It’s been a goal of mine, and something that I’ve worked really hard towards,” she said. “I get to have a little bit more input in terms of larger budgetary decisions, which has such a great impact on our students and our staff.”
Coquillette said she is particularly excited to work with the School Board and administration to create plans and goals for the future, and “helping our students become the strongest learners that they can be.”
Coquillette was chosen after what Superintendent Chris Martin called a “very competitive” interview process.
“Ms. Coquillette brings a strong and varied background to the district,” stated Martin. “Highbridge Hill will be in kind, capable and compassionate hands.”
“I’m really thrilled,” Coquillette said. “I cannot wait, it’s wonderful and I’m just really flattered for this opportunity.”
