HOLLAND, MI – Holland Public Schools has selected middle school principal Nick Cassidy to serve as the district’s next superintendent.
The Holland Board of Education voted to enter contract negotiations with Cassidy during the Wednesday, March 16 board meeting following an afternoon of interviews and meetings with community members, the district announced Thursday.
Cassidy has been serving as the district’s interim superintendent since December, after Holland’s previous superintendent, Shanie Keelean, stepped down less than five months after she was hired.
The district held an internal search this month to fill the position, and Cassidy was the only candidate who applied for the job, the district said in a news release.
Board president Liz Colburn called Cassidy an “exceptional leader” who is dedicated to putting students’ needs first. She said Cassidy has proven himself to be an effective superintendent during his time as interim.
“In the short time Nick has been the Interim Superintendent, he has led with a commitment to excellence and a collaborative spirit,” Colburn said in a statement. “He has shown he will do whatever is necessary to help the district thrive and does not shy away from rolling up his sleeves to work alongside his colleagues wherever he is needed. While Nick is well aware of the challenges facing HPS, he addresses them with positive energy and a problem-solving mindset. We are confident Nick is the right person to lead Holland Public Schools into the future.”
The board hopes to reach a contract agreement with Cassidy before its next special meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. March 28.
Cassidy has worked at Holland Public Schools for nine years, according to the release. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Saginaw Valley State University, and a master’s degree in educational leadership and an educational specialist degree in educational Leadership and administration from Georgia State University.
“Over the last few months I have been so grateful for the support of the HPS staff and community,” Cassidy said in a prepared statement. “Their encouragement and belief in me as a leader has inspired me to take on this great responsibility. I am honored that the board has trusted me with this opportunity and I am excited to work with them and our staff to continue to push our district forward.”
Holland Public Schools had 3,079 enrolled students during the 2020-21 school year.
Keelean’s starting salary was $162,000 as part of a three-year contract in 2021.
