Westville Junior appoints new principal - Highway Mail

SHARON Jenkins has been appointed as Westville Junior Primary School’s new principal and she hopes to continue to interact with learners outside of the classroom.

Jenkins took over from Marilyn de Vries, after she served as the Head of Department (HOD) at the school.

“I have always been passionate about teaching. It’s something I have always wanted to do,” she smiled.

She studied at the Durban College of Education and started her career in 2001 at Benjamin Pine Primary School.

“I joined Westville Junior Primary School after being offered an HOD position,” she said.

As a dedicated educator, Jenkins said she will miss preparing lessons for the children and helping them reach their full potential.

“I am excited for this new position and I wish to work hand-in-hand with the staff, parents and the community to bring changes that will lead the school forward. As much as change is not always easy, times have changed, the way we communicate has changed and we have to keep up with the technology and be willing to adapt,” she said.

As a former parent at the school, Jenkins mentioned that she had an idea of the expectations parents have and will use this knowledge to uplift her staff and learners.

The dedicated principal highlighted her two themes for the year.

“The first one is dedicated to my staff. The past two years have been very challenging, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and I want them to focus on themselves, to develop and grow themselves.

“My second theme is for the whole school community, which is to embrace the dynamic, new things and change,” she said.

Jenkins said that with the help of her staff, they have already planned exciting and educational after-school activities.

The wife and mother of two teenagers added that, with her new position, she hopes to bring the community together as she is intrinsically involved in community-based activities.

She described herself as a very social person. “I love the beach, it is my go-to place. I also enjoy and love watching sports,” she said.
