Barnum Elementary School is searching for a new principal, after Judi Vitito announced this week she will be leaving the school to take a job in the Proctor Public School District.
In a letter posted to the Barnum Public Schools’ Facebook page on Tuesday, Jan. 4, Vitito wrote that she accepted a job as Proctor’s director of curriculum and learning. She will start there on Monday, Jan. 10. Her final day in Barnum is Friday, Jan. 7, said Barnum Superintendent Mike McNulty.
Vitito began her tenure as Barnum Elementary School principal at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year, McNulty said.
It’s uncommon for educational positions to open up in the middle of the school year. Educators typically announce their intentions to leave a district in the spring and remain in their posts until the school year ends.
The timing combined with the shortage of educators throughout the state poses a challenge for Barnum, and McNulty said he’s hoping to get applications for the posting.
Despite the challenges the district faces in filling Vitito’s position, McNulty said officials knew Vitito had been interested in curriculum work.
“Judy wanted to look into something more in curriculum and instruction — that’s her passion,” McNulty said.
In the meantime, McNulty and high school Principal Jodi Fanth will work with staff at the elementary school to take care of the elementary principal duties until the position is filled.
In the letter, Vitito said she is grateful to have served the Barnum community.
“While I look forward to the challenges and intention of the work (in Proctor), it is difficult to leave the students, staff, and Barnum school community as I place high value on the relationships built over the past four years,” Vitito said. “Yet, I know Barnum Elementary students will be in good hands with a committed staff and solid programs and practices in place that will continue to grow in the years ahead.”
