GREENFIELD — The Greenfield School Department has posted an opening for principal at Greenfield High School.
Acting Principal Jonathan Cavallo, who assumed the role this summer, will continue as acting principal until the position is filled, according to Superintendent Christine DeBarge, at which point he plans to return to his previous role as associate principal.
Christina Huff, who started earlier this month, and Gina Johnson currently serve as associate principals.
“My intention now is to have three associate principals, given the challenges we are having,” DeBarge explained. During a Nov. 10 School Committee meeting, nearly 20 parents, teachers and students spoke to the near daily disruptions happening at the middle and high school this year, some of which have resulted in police response and shelters-in-place.
Cavallo became acting principal following longtime Principal Karin Patenaude’s promotion to assistant superintendent of teaching and learning in June.
“The School Committee and our leadership team is thankful for Mr. Cavallo’s time, energy and effort in helping us navigate through what has been a transformative time for our high school on several fronts,” DeBarge wrote in her weekly address to the community last week.
The search for a new principal is among many vacancies in the district, DeBarge previously said. She hopes to hire someone who can start after the holiday break.
While certain positions have been filled — the second associate principal position at the high school and an additional school counseling position, as well as hall monitors — many vacancies still exist throughout the district.
“One of the challenges we’re facing district-wide is when we post positions, sometimes staff from one building apply to the other, and when we accept that transfer request, we create a vacancy in another place,” she noted.
There are currently openings listed for special education teachers, English language arts teachers, instructional assistants and several cafeteria workers.
Jobs listings are posted to the district’s employment page, which can be found at gpsk12.org/gps-district-wide/administration/employment.
