After 42 years, the now former principal of Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School is moving on to a new challenge.
Don Berry is moving on from his post as principal of YCMHS for a new one with the school board.
Berry started his career at the Yarmouth Junior High School, before becoming principal of YCMHS shortly after the new building opened on Forest Street and grade nine’s were added.
Looking back on his time as principal, He says loving what you do is the most important part.
“Seeing kids go from not being able to do things and then being able to be very successful in whatever career they pick, be proud, and set goals for themselves is a real uplifting feeling, that’s what has kept me young.”
Berry recently took a position with the Tri-County Regional Centre for Education.
He discussed his new job, saying he’ll be working on race relations, with principals on leadership roles and of course shaping the next generation.
“We’re going to see what new challenges come our way and what new things we need to adjust to, and then try to lead our community which we believe has excellent students,” says Berry. “We know we have them. We know parents are giving us the best that they have and we’re just going to mold them to become leaders like I am.”
He also shared some words of encouragement for his successor at YCMHS, Julian Dease, saying the key to leading is listening.
