Central Lutheran School community mourns loss of principal to COVID-19 - Fort Wayne's NBC

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - A heartbreaking loss for a New Haven family and for the Central Lutheran School community in New Haven after their principal passed of COVID-19.

John Weber died Saturday after complications with COVID-19 at only 43-years-old.

His wife, Sarah Weber, says she was by his side for more than a year as he battled lung cancer.

"He was doing chemo and radiation, and he was doing better," Weber said. "Then in August he was worried about going back to school with COVID."

She says not even a year after he was cancer-free, John was back in the hospital with a serious case of COVID-19.

"He thought it was a sinus infection, but he found out it was COVID," she said. "He didn't want to go back to the hospital, he was so sick of being poked and prodded after chemo."

She says because of the cancer, she knew her husband was always at high-risk so he got vaccinated as soon as he could.

John caught a rare breakthrough case of COVID-19.

"As soon as he could get his shot he did, because he wanted to be protected," Weber said. "We knew he had two strikes against him with the lung cancer and one less lobe in his lung."

She says her husband battled COVID-19 for about two months on a ventilator, and Saturday his fight came to an end.

"I would like to know what he was thinking," Weber said. "I want to say I love you one more time."

Students and staff at Central Lutheran School and Preschool painted a rock outside with messages of support for their principal.

"He knew he was going to die, several days before I asked, are you ready to go see Jesus? And he said yeah," she said. "Knowing he was ready was comforting."

Weber says she wants to remind people the pandemic is not over.

"Be cautious, get vaccinated, that's important," Weber said. "John never thought he was going to die from this at all, but it happens."

Weber says Central Lutheran School and Preschool will be closed on Thursday and Friday for John Weber's visitation and funeral services
