Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (H-SCDSB) trustees approved procedural guidelines for hiring of principals and vice-principals at their Wednesday meeting, but not before some concern was raised by one trustee.
Trustee Gary Trembinski voiced his concern over the board’s willingness to allow some new principal and vice-principal hires extra time to complete a Master of Education degree.
Rose Burton Spohn, H-SCDSB director of education, said some openings for principal and vice-principal jobs in geographically distanced areas (such as the northern and eastern reaches of the board’s geographical area) might not attract as many fully qualified applicants.
With that in mind, Burton Spohn said “we have to be flexible with that.”
However, Burton Spohn emphasized there is always an understanding on the part of those principal and vice-principal candidates that they must earn all the needed qualifications, such as a Master of Education degree, “within a certain period of time.”
Trembinski said it is “disrespecting” and “dishonouring” to those candidates who earn their full credentials over the summer months.
“To open the door carte blanche to a group of people who aren’t qualified over people who are qualified, I just don’t think I’m comfortable with that as a trustee,” Trembinski said.
Though Huron-Superior trustee Lindsay Liske told Trembinski he voiced “a legitimate concern,” trustees approved the procedural guidelines for hiring of principals and vice-principals as presented on Wednesday’s agenda.
In other H-SCDSB news, trustees approved trustee honoraria as recommended by the board.
Effective Dec. 1, 2021, trustees will be paid $6,681, the vice-chair a maximum of $9,431, the chair a maximum of $12,181.
