Teachers speak out to support former principal - Wise County Messenger

Multiple teachers and a former student took the podium at a packed Boyd ISD school board meeting Monday night to support former Boyd High School principal Chelsea Reeves following her reassignment within the district.

Several public comment speakers pointed to Boyd’s Sept. 20 school board meeting where one person raised concerns about bullying issues at the high school and the lack of action from school district leadership.

Following that meeting, Reeves was moved into a different role, and former middle school principal Daniel Bourgeois was assigned to the high school.

With around 30 people in attendance, three Boyd ISD educators spoke in support of Reeves, pointing out the amount of administrative turnover at the district and how that impacts teachers and students, adding that bullying issues were not new or isolated to the high school in Boyd.

“It baffles me how in less than 24 hours the dynamic at BISD was changed so drastically affecting three of our four campuses and the administration,” said Boyd teacher Lisa Warren. “It appears a knee-jerk reaction was made with little thought of how it affects so many people, adults and students alike.”

During public comment, one former Boyd High School student handed out printed copies of an online petition to reinstate Reeves. The petition, posted on Change.org, has since gained more than 200 signatures.

“Mrs. Reeves has had a significant positive impact at BHS in her short time as principal and has shown tremendous dedication and profound leadership to both teachers and students,” the petition states. “Her removal on Sept. 20, 2021, from the principal position without any explanation and/or clarification from the district has left many people incredibly frustrated. Our parents, students, teachers and staff deserve clarity regarding why she was reassigned because our voices and education matter.”

Boyd Superintendent Tamara Vardy did not respond to the Messenger’s request for clarification on the issue. The Boyd ISD website has not updated its website to reflect the administration changes.

Reeves, who has spent her entire education career at Boyd ISD, was named to the principal position before the 2020 school year.

She was initially hired to teach consumer science. Two years later, she became the career and technical education director, while still teaching in the classroom. She was promoted to the school’s assistant principal in February 2020.

Following procedures on public comment, trustees and district staff did not respond to the speakers Monday night.
