An online petition to remove a St. Catharines principal for displaying “satanic imagery” in an Iron Maiden fan photo that received worldwide attention has been dropped.
The petition was closed on the change.org website Sunday night with the statement, “Our group has dropped the petition” and no other details.
Started last week, the petition had garnered 553 signatures when it was shut down Sunday, though many of the signers were not actual supporters but wanted to be able to leave comments criticizing the call to transfer the principal.
A counter petition in support of the principal, “We need Mrs. Burns,” had reached more than 19,600 signatures Monday.
The issue began after Eden High School principal Sharon Burns posted a photo on her Eden Principal Instagram account with paraphernalia from heavy metal group Iron Maiden. A hand drawn heart with 666 — the number of the beast — caught the attention of the petition creator who said parents were “deeply disturbed” the principal “blatantly showed Satanic symbols and her allegiance to Satanic practices.”
That led to the counter petition saying Burns was “one of the best and most enthusiastic principals” the school has ever had.
News of a petition to remove an Iron Maiden-loving principal in St. Catharines was picked up internationally including by The New York Post which stated, “The “Satanic Panic” of the 1980’s may be making a comeback in North America.”
Other sites like The Independent in the UK, which noted Iron Maiden was formed in 1975 in East London, Yahoo News, The Daily Beast and other online publications, music and pop culture websites, ran items about the petitions.
A District School Board of Niagara spokeswoman said Friday the school board encourages families to proactively have discussions with school administrators when there are concerns about school matters and work together to solve issues.
