There are now seven candidates in the race hoping to secure one of three Sherwood Park trustee seats with the local public school district.

Sharon Gach, a retired assistant principal from EIPS, has entered the race after deciding she wasn’t yet done with education.

“I retired as an assistant principal from Elk Island Public Schools in June. I decided I wanted to stay involved with education and gave it a lot of thought and thought I should throw my name in for a trustee position,” explained Gach.

Gach has worked at F.R. Haythorne, Bev Facey and Rudolph Hennig, with the latter being her final school before retiring.

“I started in Vegreville and I’ve worked in Sherwood Park and Fort Saskatchewan,” she said, adding she has been a consultant for a math curriculum. “I’ve seen all the schools throughout the district and have a good district perspective, and I have a few ideas about what we should do to keep us one of the best districts around.”

The candidate said the pandemic and post-pandemic situation is one reason she wants to become a trustee.

“After working, especially in the last 14 months, through the COVID pandemic, I just saw a lot of things we’re going to need to learn to address, like the learning gap, trying to get kids back to a normal school experience, trying to make sure all our students are able to safely return to classes and teachers are able to help them get back to where they need to be,” Gach said. “So many of our students, through no fault of their own, ended up pivoting in and out or ended up out of school for 14 months where they had varying degrees of learning and I think we need to support the kids to get them back where they need to be.”

The first-time candidate said she is also supportive of the COVID-19 safety protocols that have been put in place and will push for safety in schools.

With 38 years of experience working for EIPS, Gach said the next few years in Alberta education could be turbulent.

“I’ve worked on many curriculum committees through my years as an educator and I’m not in favour of this curriculum,” she said. “I don’t think it takes into account how students learn, I don’t believe it is age appropriate and I think there is a lot of gaps.”

Gach said there has also been so much feedback from parents, teachers and the public that this curriculum is not acceptable.

“I’m very passionate about education and about the future of our province and our municipality,” she said. “Parents know their kids best and it is really important we seek their input on decisions. But I also believe it takes a village to raise a child and we have so many great resources at EIPS they can tap into to help support our young people because they are our future.”

Gach said she wants to hear from the community and hear concerns from those planning to vote this election.
