WARREN COUNTY, N.C. — One high school principal in Warren County is going above and beyond to take care of his students.
Principal John Green says the pandemic put some students and families in tough financial situations. Some high schoolers couldn’t even afford to participate in graduation earlier this year. He didn’t want to see students experience that so he decided to do something about it.

He puts his paychecks into a “blessing account” and uses the money for anything from school expenses to food
On top of being a principal full-time at Warren New Tech High School, Green also works almost 40 hours a week at McDonald’s.
“Each day starts my day with running a school and ends with going to McDonald’s,” Green said. “This county that we are presently in is where I graduated from, so I always wanted to be able to give back to the community that gave me my opportunity.”
Green is deeply connected to Warren County, and he remembers his time growing up wasn’t always easy.
“Coming up, I had some challenges financially where you just wanted to do things with your classmates, but you couldn’t, but you didn’t want anyone to know that you couldn’t afford it,” Green said.
When he learned the pandemic was putting a financial strain on some families, he got to work.
“I don’t get enough sleep, but what keeps me going is I think about what it’s for,” Green said.
Each paycheck from McDonald’s goes straight into a “blessing account.”
“If a parent reaches out and says sometimes they don’t have enough food in the house, I can go and let them know that an envelope is coming home with their child, and this is what will be in it. Do what you need to do,” Green said.
He’s been doing this for months, and doesn’t keep track of how much money has come and gone from the account because, for him, he’s just doing what he needs to do to help others in need.
“Being able to have children come back and say ‘thank you’ lets you know that it’s worthwhile,” Green said.
Green actually started the blessing account at Warren County High School, but was transferred to Warren New Tech High School this year and is now using it to help students at both schools.
Green also teaches in person at the local community college, but that’s been put on pause because of the pandemic. Green says his time at McDonald's may depend on when he goes back to teach there.
